Poster 11: Making a Commitment to Cultural Safety – Nursing 101

A newly developed resource – the cultural competence toolkit is designed to support nurses delivering culturally competent care through self reflection and practicing cultural humility so patients feel understood, valued and respected.

JP Munro, RPN, Professional Practice Associate, WeRPN – the Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario

JP Munro holds a diploma in Business Management from Humber College, a Practical Nursing Diploma from Sheridan College and is currently in the process of completing the Bachelor of Health Administration (BHA) program at Toronto Metropolitan University.

After re-learning about the atrocities that occurred in the Canadian Residential School system, JP sparked an interest in equity, diversity, inclusivity and belonging and how it related to his nursing practice. In collaboration with his colleagues, JP began researching the topic to develop a practice resource designed for nurses seeking to enhance their ability to provide culturally safe care in a way that exemplifies cultural humility. He continues to develop his interest in this topic and looks forward to developing future resources to educate nurses on the topic of equity, diversity, inclusivity and belonging.
