Despite widespread nursing shortages across various sectors, operating rooms (ORs) in particular face acute staffing challenges. Results from a two-phase qualitative descriptive study provided insights into RPN utilization highlighting opportunities for leadership around new models of care, nurses working to full scope of practice and further continuing professional development.

Dr Sherry Espin is an Associate Professor in the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing at Toronto Metropolitan University. Dr. Espin’s research focuses on the advancement of nursing and interprofessional practice and education, health services and policy research across a variety of research areas. These include teamwork, innovative models of care, integrated care, quality and patient safety, nursing leadership, and advanced practice nursing. Her work crosses various health sectors including acute care, pediatrics, long-term care, and community.
