When faced with a shortage of critical care nurses due to a lack of experienced applicants, we expanded nursing student placements, introduced the New Graduate Guarantee program, and connected staff with mentors and exposure opportunities. These approaches significantly increased the number of placements, improved success rates in the critical care certification, and highlighted the vital role of nursing leadership in strengthening the critical care workforce.

Jennifer Lovering holds an Honours Bachelor of Health Science and an Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The University of Western Ontario and is currently a Master of Nursing student at Athabasca University. As an experienced critical care nurse, her professional path has been marked by dedication to patient care, staff support and quality improvement initiatives. At Sunnybrook Jennifer’s current work focuses on optimizing critical care staffing through forecasting training needs, facilitating hiring into the critical care sponsorship, and liaising with academic institutions. She is passionate about fostering collaboration and cultivating positive learning and teaching environments.
Lauren Cosolo, RN, BScN, MN, CON(C), Nursing Education Lead, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre
Lauren graduated with a Master of Nursing from the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto in 2017. Lauren started her nursing career in 2013 at Sunnybrook before moving into oncology as the Advanced Practice Nurse in the Odette Cancer Centre. Lauren is interested in nursing education, advancing nursing practice and delivering high quality patient care
