The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has revealed serious gaps and disparities across health systems, none more sharply focused than in the institutional long-term care sector. The pandemic certainly has laid bare longstanding issues of inadequate funding, physical plant, staffing and other resources in the sector. But within jurisdictions, nursing homes operating under similar rules and having similar funding realized a wide range of outcomes during the pandemic – and that points to leadership and decision-making.
