A6: A Nursing Mentorship Program Using an Authentic Leadership Approach

Mentorship is a mutually beneficial long-term relationship between an experienced nurse and a less experienced nurse, where expertise and knowledge are transferred, support and guidance are provided, and personal development and career advancement are encouraged. Utilizing an authentic leadership framework to train mentors positively influences trust, healthier work environments, reduced workplace bullying, organizational culture, and attrition rates.

Courtney Houldsworth, RN, MN, BSc is the Manager, Nurse Residency Program in Professional Practice at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie, Ontario. A nurse of 13 years, Courtney’s career has seen her enjoy working in the NICU, post-secondary education, clinical education, informatics, and professional practice. In her current role she has had the exciting opportunity to develop and implement new programming to support nursing retention and psychosocial wellness with her amazing team.
