Message from the President - Sue Roger
September has arrived and with it, return to school and work routines and planning for the coming year. Your NLN Board of Directors has determined strategic priorities for 2010/11 that include social media trials for membership, nursing student and new graduate engagement, mid-career learning opportunities and NLN.ON recruitment and retention. It seems like a large agenda however I would commend to your the NLN.ON Board of Directors for their commitment and energy.
The Conference Planning Committee has presented their conference agenda - “Setting the Bar for a High Performing Health Care System”. The annual conference is a cornerstone for NLN.ON and has attracted up to 350 attendees in past years. The Excellent Care for All Act 2010 will provide a platform for sub-themes this year and I look forward to lively discussion and sharing colleagues’ implementation plans. Our keynote speaker selections and, ever-popular, poster presentations frame a large selection of concurrent sessions and networking opportunities. As a reminder, the deadline for call for abstracts is October 25, 2010.
Our annual Research and Education Awards are presented at the annual conference. Each year the NLN.ON awards up to $8,500.00 in research scholarships and educational bursaries. Applications are being accepted until November 1, 2010 and can be made electronically through the NLN.ON website.
Our Communications and Membership committees have combined their forces and will be trialling Facebook, Twitter and just-in-time external newsfeeds. These are exciting times for NLN.ON as communication tools development will provide us with direct links to our members. A full evaluation will be available in early 2011.
It is a hectic but productive time of year for everyone. Take a walk through the leaves, enjoy a Fall Fair and I hope that you can take the time to keep up to date with the latest at NLN.ON. We will be glad to hear your feedback as our work unfolds.
Sue Roger, President NLN.ON

This issue’s topic, requested by the NLN.ON Board of Directors, is “Creating an Organizational Environment That Supports the Use of Evidence”. References have been selected by InfoFinders to provide readers with various perspectives published within scholarly journals over the last few years.
Many Canadian nursing leaders have discovered the value InfoFinders can add to a project. The company searches the published and grey literature, using electronic databases and the Internet to identify best practices and to assist in using the research to provide support and validate evidence-based projects. They can also identify experts and conduct key informant interviews to jumpstart organizational projects.
Experienced RNs review the information, select citations and filter down to a manageable amount of information. Our clients include health consultants, hospitals, associations, and universities.
As an Interest Group of the RNAO, all our full standing members must be members of our professional association. Our fee for 2010/11 is $55.00. This fee will be payable to the RNAO when you join our Interest Group.
